🇩🇪 Surveillance AI in public spaces: Senate wants to test new technology in Berlin

Berlin’s Senate confirmed plans to pilot a surveillance AI that analyzes pedestrian behavior, following deployments in Mannheim and Hamburg.

The system reviews public movements in real time to flag unusual behavior; supporters cite potential safety benefits, while critics raise privacy concerns. The move highlights the spread of digital monitoring in German cities amid debate over safeguards.

Berlin has not announced pilot locations or timing; officials are reviewing legal parameters and scope, including whether to start in limited areas. Further details and evaluations are expected in the coming months. (Berliner Zeitung, 2 minute read)

🇩🇪 After cyber attack: IT at BER could be up and running again on Sunday

Berlin Brandenburg Airport said its core IT system could be restored by Sunday after a Sept. 19 cyberattack, with service provider Collins Aerospace aiming to bring it back online this week.

The attack largely disabled electronic systems for passenger and baggage processing, forcing manual workarounds and delays. Airport officials caution full normal operations will not immediately resume once the core system is back.

Counters and boarding gates will be reactivated in stages, and disruptions may persist for several days, with potential weekend bottlenecks; passengers should monitor their flights and expect some manual processing. (Berliner Zeitung, 2 minute read)

🇩🇪 Several injured in streetcar accident at Alexanderplatz

A Danish tour bus collided with a tram near Berlin’s Alexanderplatz, seriously injuring the bus driver and lightly injuring at least five tram passengers, including schoolchildren.

The crash on Mollstraße derailed the tram and knocked out power to a wider section after the bus was pushed into a tram power mast. Firefighters treated about 30 people; both vehicles were destroyed.

Tram service in the area will remain disrupted for an extended cleanup as crews re-rail the tram and investigators review why the bus attempted to cross the tracks. (STERN.de, 2 minute read)
