🇩🇪 43 million tons: What the huge lithium deposit in Saxony-Anhalt means

Neptune Energy says it has identified a major lithium deposit in the Altmark region of northern Saxony-Anhalt, estimating 43 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent following a summer pilot project.

Lithium is essential for batteries and the energy transition, with global demand expected to at least triple by 2035. The find could bolster German and EU supply, but extraction faces environmental concerns and local opposition.

Neptune will continue pilot work and assess commercial viability and permits; authorities and communities will weigh environmental impacts as plans for potential production are developed. (t3n, 2 minute read)

🇩🇪 "No sudden increase in cannabis consumption"

An interim evaluation of Germany's April 2024 cannabis partial legalization reports no clear spike in use or health issues, stable adult consumption, continued decline among youth, no major traffic impact, reduced reported cannabis offenses, and limited impact from cannabis clubs on the black market.

Researchers from Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Tübingen delivered the first mandated review of the law allowing restricted adult use and cultivation since April 1, 2024. They see no urgent need to adjust possession limits or rules but stress the findings are preliminary and more data are required.

The government will use the evaluation to decide next steps, with potential tweaks to strengthen legal supply via cannabis clubs, while researchers continue monitoring consumption, health, traffic, and illicit market trends before issuing more definitive conclusions. (LTO.de, 5 minute read)

🇩🇪 Police looking for suspected perpetrator after fire with two fatalities in Berlin-Marzahn

Berlin police are searching for two missing residents, one suspected of starting a house fire in Marzahn that left two dead and injured four others, as prosecutors open a murder and attempted murder investigation.

The blaze broke out overnight Sunday in a semi-detached house rented to eight skilled workers; one survivor remains in life-threatening condition. Investigators found no political or religious motive, and autopsy results and cause of death have not been released.

Police continue the manhunt and forensic work at the scene, while authorities await autopsy findings and may issue charges if the suspect is located. (rbb24, 2 minute read)
