More than 100,000 people marched in Berlin to protest Germany’s support for Israel and the war in Gaza, calling for an end to arms exports and accusing Israel of genocide.
The rally, organized by about 50 groups, underscores mounting domestic pressure: a YouGov poll reported 62% of German voters view Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide. German leaders have criticized the campaign but avoid that term.
Demonstrators urged halting military cooperation and pressing EU sanctions, and demanded greater humanitarian access to Gaza. Watch for government reviews of arms export licenses, aid commitments, and further protests as the debate intensifies. (Al Jazeera, 2 minute read)
Germany’s banks must, starting Oct 9, check that a payee’s name matches the IBAN before executing euro transfers and provide instant euro payments free of charge, implementing an EU-wide rule.
The safeguards aim to cut misdirected payments and invoice fraud and to accelerate SEPA transactions by making instant transfers standard at no extra cost. Banks have been required to receive instant payments since Jan 9; free sending completes the rollout.
Customers will see name mismatch alerts before confirming transfers, while regulators monitor compliance on instant-payment fees and track fraud and error rates as implementation spreads. (MDR, 4 minute read)
Germany’s Federal Police extended a ban on carrying knives, pepper spray, and other dangerous items at 16 Berlin-area train stations, effective daily from 2 p.m. to 4 a.m., Oct. 1–27, 2025.
The order follows 257 violent offenses at those hubs from January to July 2025, including 97 involving knives or irritants; about 76% occurred between 2 p.m. and 4 a.m. Earlier checks of 9,600 people found 704 dangerous items.
Federal Police plan targeted checks and strict enforcement, including confiscations and typical €200 fines for repeat violations; officials will monitor incident trends to decide on further measures. (B.Z. – Die Stimme Berlins, 3 minute read)
