🇩🇪 Check-in problems at BER: many departures delayed

Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport (BER) saw widespread disruption Monday, with roughly 70% of departures delayed—some over an hour—and long lines, three days after a cyberattack crippled check-in and baggage systems.

The ransomware attack targeted IT provider Collins Aerospace and also disrupted airports in Dublin, Brussels, and London. BER staff reverted to manual processes as a post-marathon travel surge swelled passenger volume to about 95,000, worsening delays.

BER is working with the provider to verify systems are clean before reconnecting, with no timeline for restoration; travelers should check in online, use self-service bag drop, and expect continued delays. (rbb24, 3 minute read)

🇩🇪 Germany's toughest police law? Berlin debates video surveillance and permission to shoot

The Berlin state parliament began debating a sweeping overhaul of police and public order laws, expanding video and communications surveillance, permitting AI-assisted monitoring, and formally authorizing a lifesaving use of firearms.

Supporters say the update aligns Berlin with other states and addresses crime and terrorism. Plans include video monitoring of hotspots, source-based interception of encrypted messaging, broader data access, drones, longer transit video retention, ankle monitors, and an explicit ban on racial profiling; opposition warns of civil-liberties risks.

Lawmakers will refine the bills in committee before a plenary vote; civil-rights groups are expected to pursue court challenges if the measures pass. (Berliner Zeitung, 4 minute read)

🇩🇪 More and more job losses in Berlin - Wagenknecht: "Germany is in recession"

New federal data show job losses from corporate insolvencies in Berlin reached a multi-year high: nearly 11,000 people lost jobs in 2024, with another 6,400 affected in the first half of 2025.

Nationwide, workers affected by insolvencies more than doubled from roughly 76,000 in 2021 to about 184,000 in 2024, amid high energy costs, higher interest rates, post-pandemic adjustments, and heavy bureaucracy. Berlin’s broader economic recovery has stalled, reflecting the national slowdown.

Economists will monitor 2025 insolvency filings and employment data to see whether job losses in Berlin again exceed 10,000 and whether the nationwide trend worsens. (Berliner Zeitung, 2 minute read)
